For years, Metz was a multi-instrumentalist with Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real, and in 2023 he began playing piano on tour with Willie Nelson. Along the way, he’s shared stages with an almost absurd list of musical heavyweights: Neil Young, Stephen Stills, Eddie Vedder, Bob Weir, Joe Walsh, Jimmy Buffett, Warren Haynes, Robby Krieger, John Densmore and Mike McCready.

A Wisconsin-based singer-songwriter, pianist, multi-instrumentalist and raconteur, Metz makes music that wanders freely through folk, country, rock and jazz, built around sophisticated chord changes, sharply drawn characters and a wonderfully dry lyrical wit. His own bio places his songwriting firmly in the Tom Waits / Randy Newman tradition of piano-driven storytelling.

And there’s a lot more going on beneath the surface. Metz earned a master’s degree from the University of Chicago, where his thesis was a full-length 1960s rock-opera adaptation of Shakespeare’s Othello. He was also awarded a Fulbright scholarship in 2018—but turned it down to go back on the road with Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real. He has written plays, soundtracks, poetry and children’s music, and even published musical collaborations with Nobel Prize-winning playwright Wole Soyinka.

His newest solo work, including “Sunrise” and “Overrated,” brings all of those worlds together: a songwriter’s songwriter with a lifetime of stories and the musical chops to take them just about anywhere.
