On Saturday, August 29, at 6 p.m., Hawaiʻi Public Radio welcomes Shar Tui’asoa to the Atherton to explore the responsibility and power that come with creating art rooted in identity, culture, and personal values. Together, we’ll hear about authenticity, representation, and how artists can create hope and connection during difficult times and standing by their beliefs.
The Conversation's Kevin Allen guides us through this storytelling event that examines how what we make matters, especially in difficult times.
About the artist:
Pasifika illustrator Shar Tui’asoa burst into the art world through her celebration of beautiful, bold, brown women of all shapes and sizes. Her signature style is influenced by the richness of her Tongan heritage and the vibrancy of her upbringing in Hawai’i, leading to her establishing Punky Aloha Studio in 2018.
Since then, she has been commissioned by clients including Apple, Disney, Pixar, META, Nike, Amazon, Target, Starbucks, Sephora, Old Navy, AT&T, and the New York Times. She also partnered with Harper Collins for her children’s book “Punky Aloha”, becoming the first Pasifika woman to release literature under a major publishing house. The IP currently sits in development with a major animation studio.
When she’s not washing paint out of her hair, Shar loves being a Mom and traveling the world, spending as much time in the Pacific as possible.

The Live from the Atherton Storytellers' Series takes place at the Atherton Performing Arts studio at Hawaiʻi Public Radio. Doors open thirty minutes before the event starts.
This event will be filmed, recorded and photographed. Your presence constitutes your release of all rights to your recorded voice and image, which may be used in projects by Hawaiʻi Public Radio.
Seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis — advance ticket purchase or reservation is strongly suggested.

Parking: Street parking is available in the surrounding neighborhood (metered parking is free after 6 p.m.).
