A Knight Foundation survey this year of 25,000 Americans found a majority expect a decline in the future of free speech in the United States. Headlines can make it feel like the foundational protections of the First Amendment may be eroding faster than our local coastlines. It doesn’t have to be that way, but it’s essential for an informed citizenry to pay attention.
HPR’s Bill Dorman uses examples from his own journalistic experiences about media freedom (and lack of it) from Washington to Moscow, Ho Chi Minh City, Beijing and elsewhere, putting the First Amendment into a global context and sharing why he carries hope for the future—and what you can do about it.
About the Guest Speakers:
Bill Dorman, Senior Vice President of News and Executive Editor, has been with Hawai‘i Public Radio since February 2011. Born in New York City, he spent 21 years at CNN in various positions behind the scenes and on the air in Atlanta, New York, Washington DC, and Tokyo, Japan. He was also managing editor of Asia Pacific Broadcast for Bloomberg News for five years before moving to Hawai‘i in 2009. He’s covered stories from more than twenty countries and territories.
Pixie Clay, Managing Editor, works with HPR's team of reporters and producers to bring accurate, impactful, and compelling news stories to our audience through broadcast and online platforms. She's also a member of The Poynter Institute's 2025 Leadership Academy for Women cohort.

The Live from the Atherton Storytellers' Series takes place at the Atherton Performing Arts studio at Hawaiʻi Public Radio. Doors open thirty minutes before the event starts.
This event will be filmed, recorded and photographed. Your presence constitutes your release of all rights to your recorded voice and image, which may be used in projects by Hawaiʻi Public Radio.
Seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis — advance ticket purchase or reservation is strongly suggested.
