About this Event

Join the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research (INSTAAR) for an exclusive screening of award-winning documentarian Ariel Waldman's upcoming PBS docuseries "Life Unearthed" at the Dairy Arts Center (2590 Walnut St). This free, but ticketed event is a part of INSTAAR's 75th anniversary event series.

Over the past several years, CU Boulder’s Antarctic field scientists brought Waldman along on annual expeditions to the McMurdo Dry Valleys, the coldest desert in the world. In her film, Waldman weaves together a personal narrative of discovery against a backdrop of stunning landscapes and microphotography of single-celled organisms. A story emerges of the microbial life that thrives in one of the harshest environments on Earth.

“A lot of people think of Antarctica as a place that’s barren and mostly lifeless,” Waldman says in a trailer. “Really, this is a continent that’s absolutely dynamic — filled with so many ecosystems, hundreds of species, and it’s at the precipice of change.

Following the film, Waldman will join INSTAAR fellows Michael Gooseff and Diane McKnight, the current and former lead principle investigators of the McMurdo Dry Valleys Long-Term Ecological Research Program respectively, for a Q&A.

Program:

  • 6 to 7 pm: Empanadas, tabling, and social hour in the lobby from INSTAAR, CU Science Discovery, and more.
  • 7 to 8 pm: "Life Unearthed with Ariel Waldman" screening in the Gordon Gamm Theater
  • 8 to 8:30 pm: A Q&A with the filmmaker and researchers: Ariel Waldman, Michael Gooseff, and Diane McKnight.
