Joan Crawford was never better as a woman who flees her possessive paramour (Nils Asther) and falls for American tycoon Robert Montgomery. LETTY LYNTON was a big hit, and the white organdy gown with ruffled sleeves Adrian designed for Crawford flew off the shelves at Macy’s. But the writers of a play that focused on the same real-life case claimed that the film had too many similarities to their work, made claims for copyright infringement, and as a result the film was pulled from circulation in 1936. While it was a critical and financial success upon release, those legal complications precluded further distribution...until now. With the rights sorted out and the film meticulously restored, LETTY LYNTON finally returns to the screen, showcasing Crawford at her most glamorous. After working as a secretary, assistant, and screenwriter for Alfred Hitchcock, Joan Harrison broke out to become one of Hollywood’s first female producers of the sound era with this classic film noir. She convinced Universal Pictures to pick up the rights to Cornell Woolrich’s novel and assign German-born Robert Siodmak as director. Together, they produced a tight, visceral suspense film. She also bonded with leading lady Ella Raines, another independent woman. Raines stars as the faithful secretary who sets out to prove her boss didn’t murder his wife. All she has to do is track down a mystery woman who can give him an alibi.
