About this Event
Join Dr Claire Hart, Associate Professor of Psychology in the School of Psychology at the University of Southampton, to explore "phubbing", or phone snubbing - when one partner turns to their phone during face-to-face time - and what psychology tells us about its impact on romantic relationships.
Drawing on her own research, which has been widely discussed in the media, Dr Hart explains why phone distractions can feel so meaningful to partners, how they influence feelings of closeness, conflict, and support, and why even brief moments of phone use can change how relationships feel.
You will learn how people interpret their partner's phone behaviour, why some couples are more affected than others, and what research shows about the links between phubbing, attachment, wellbeing, and relationship satisfaction. The talk also shares practical, evidence-based strategies for managing phone use more mindfully within relationships - without giving up technology altogether.
Suitable for teenagers and adults, this talk is designed to be accessible, relatable, and grounded in everyday experiences. Whether you're in a relationship, curious about relationship science, or interested in how technology shapes intimacy, you'll leave with a clearer understanding of how digital habits can influence romantic connection.
