About this Event
Join the Canmore Museum as we celebrate the closing of our exhibition Land of Thundering Snow with a special evening talk by renowned avalanche expert Grant Statham.
For generations, people living and working in the mountains have understood the immense power of snow. Avalanches have shaped transportation, industry, and everyday life throughout the Canadian Rockies - from early railway construction to modern recreation in the backcountry. The exhibition Land of Thundering Snow explores these stories of risk, resilience, and survival in avalanche terrain.
To close the exhibition, we are welcoming Grant Statham, one of Canada’s leading voices in avalanche safety and mountain risk management. Grant has spent more than three decades working in mountain environments as a guide, avalanche forecaster, and safety specialist. As a Visitor Safety Specialist with Parks Canada, he has played a key role in avalanche forecasting, public safety, and rescue response throughout the mountain national parks.
Drawing from a lifetime spent studying snow and responding to mountain incidents, Grant will share stories, insights, and lessons about avalanches, risk, and decision-making in the mountains. His talk will offer a deeper look into how avalanches shape our understanding of mountain landscapes - and how people continue to live, travel, and recreate in places where powerful natural forces are always present.
Guests will have time to explore the Land of Thundering Snow exhibition before the talk begins. Following the presentation, there will be an opportunity for audience questions and discussion with Grant.
The evening will conclude with refreshments and time to mingle with fellow community members, as well as the drawing of the winning name for the CARDA raffle.
Whether you are a skier, climber, mountain professional, history enthusiast, or simply curious about the forces that shape life in the Rockies, this closing event offers a unique opportunity to reflect on the stories and science behind avalanches.
