Workshops will be 3 hours each with a maximum of 8 participants and 3 observers per group. This will be a very popular workshop, so sign up early! Workers should have time for 2-3 smaller compositions, so you should bring two or three of your own kusamono pots. The more unique, the better. There may be an opportunity to purchase pots at the workshop from a local potter. Other necessary tools you should bring include a turntable, tweezers, scissors, wire cutters, chopsticks and gloves (if desired). Soil, muck, plants, moss, wire, mesh, string and beverages will be provided.

As an observer, you will be able to walk around the room with the teacher, and listen to discussions she has with working members. If you are not sure you are ready to fully participate as a working member, the observer position offers an excellent learning opportunity and a fantastic value!
Young Choe began her journey studying traditional art in Korea. She moved to the U.S. and developed an interest in Kusamono while volunteering at the National Bonsai and Penjing Museum over 25 years ago. That interest inspired her to earn a degree in horticulture and travel to Japan to study with master kusamono artist, Keiko Yamane, a former student of Saburo Kato. Young is considered by many to be the best Kusamono practitioner in the country. She travels internationally to teach and share her passion for the art. We are privileged to have Young Choe here to share her knowledge and remarkable artistry in Kusamono creation. https://www.kusamonochoe.com/
Kusamono is the Japanese art of creating small, naturalistic plant compositions that celebrate the beauty of grasses, wildflowers and other seasonal plants. The Japanese word Kusamono, is comprised of two characters meaning “grass” and “thing”. Often displayed alongside bonsai as an accent, kusamono stands on its own as a complete expression, emphasizing simplicity, seasonality, and a sense of place.
