Soil and Oil Are Related in More Ways Than Their Spelling!

Join The Study for an engaging evening of conversation, community, and local craft beer at Knowledge on Tap in West Fargo.

How are agriculture and energy connected? Why is healthy soil so important? Can land recover after energy development? These are just a few of the questions explored in this lively discussion with Dr. Thomas DeSutter, University Distinguished Professor of Soil Science at North Dakota State University.

Drawing on decades of research and teaching, Dr. DeSutter will explain the surprising connections between soil, agriculture, energy production, and land reclamation. He'll share how healthy soils support both food production and responsible energy development while discussing the science behind restoring land after it has been disturbed. Whether you work in agriculture, energy, environmental science, or simply enjoy learning something new, you'll leave with a deeper appreciation for one of our most valuable natural resources.

Dr. DeSutter joined North Dakota State University in 2006 after completing his Ph.D. at Kansas State University and a postdoctoral fellowship with the USDA Agricultural Research Service. His research focuses on saline and sodic soils, reclamation of energy-extraction-impacted lands, and environmental soil science. He has taught a wide range of courses in soil science, land use, environmental sampling, and soil survey, making complex scientific topics engaging and accessible for diverse audiences.

The conversation will be moderated by Dr. Shari R. Veil, Provost and Chief Academic Officer at North Dakota State University. An internationally recognized scholar in risk and crisis communication, Dr. Veil brings extensive experience in higher education leadership and public engagement, creating an engaging conversation that welcomes audience participation.

Knowledge on Tap combines expert scholarship with an informal setting where curiosity and conversation thrive. Audience members are encouraged to ask questions and join the discussion throughout the evening.
