Join us as we kick off the 2026/27 Big Book Club season with a deep dive into Daniel Kehlmann’s The Director which shortlisted for the INTERNATIONAL BOOKER PRIZE • was a NEW YORK TIMES TOP 10 BOOK OF THE YEAR • NYPL BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR • Selected as Late Show with Stephen Colbert Book Club Pick

MRU Professor Emerita and longtime film-lover Kelly Hewson will lead a discussion about the novel's real-life inspiration, Austrian director G.W. Pabst, his experiences with the Third Reich and historical Hollywood, and way this novel relates to storytelling in our current era.

As a special bonus we'll have curated movie recommendations from the Calgary International Film Festival and a CIFF-ticket door prize!


Big Book Club talks are 45-60 minutes with time afterwards for audience questions and discussion.

Water and biscuits will be served. If you want coffee or tea, please bring your own in a lidded cup.

Many parking spaces in the main lot are reserved for pre-school pickup. Please arrive early to take advantage of accessible street parking.
