July Speculative Fiction Book Club

Speculative fiction is a broad genre. Also known as “what-if” books, spec fic changes the laws of what’s real or possible in society as we know it, then speculates on the outcome of these changes. Think sci-fi, fantasy, dystopian, etc!

Our pick for this month is Kindred by Octavia E. Butler, a gripping and unflinching novel that uses time travel to bring the horrors of American slavery into sharp, visceral focus. Dana, a Black woman living in 1976 California, is pulled without warning into the antebellum South, forced to navigate a plantation world where her very survival depends on keeping her own ancestor alive. Haunting and essential, Kindred asks how deeply the past lives within us — and what it costs to endure it.
