Register online: https://maineshakers.com/event/sashiko/Learn the embroidery art of Sashiko with local artist Kathleen Goddu. Sashiko is an ancient Japanese form of embroidery using a running stitch called ‘little rice’ or ‘little pick”. It is typically stitched white on indigo fabric. It has a long history that we will discuss. In this one day workshop you will learn the basics of sashiko, stitch a pattern of your choice and then be guided in designing something you’d like to stitch for yourself. Japanese sashiko stitch work is beautiful and could adorn your home with pillows or a table runner. You may choose to add something decorative to a piece of your clothing.
Students should bring: small fabric scissors, one sheet of 180 or 210 sandpaper, note taking supplies, and a ballpoint pen or dull pencil.
All other supplies with be provided including fabric, sashiko thread and needles, patterns to trace, transfer paper, and plastic wrap.
Experience required: Ability to use a thread and needle and use a sewing machine.
Class size: 5 minimum, 10 max
Kathleen Goddu lives and creates her art in Brunswick, Me. She has been practicing the fabric arts of shibori and sashiko for almost two decades, and shows her work locally amidst the vibrant Maine art scene. Her work illustrates a love of nature she gained as a child growing up near Little Sebago Lake.
With a degree in art and speech pathology Kathleen spent most of her 24-year career helping others find their voice. In 2000, she discovered a calling to express her own through Japanese textile art forms. Kathleen hosts workshops when she can, teaching and sharing her love of shibori and sashiko.
