Looking for a thrilling read for your holidays or to kick off the new year? The Argo Bookshop, in conjunction with the JET Alumni Association of Quebec and Atlantic Canada, will be hosting its next Japan Book Club on January 29th.Our next book will be The Night of Baba Yaga by Otani Akira. This queer yakuza thriller focuses on Shindo Yoriko, a biracial woman who ends up getting assigned to be the bodyguard of the daughter of a leading gangster. At turns violent and tender, Otani brings an well-realized literary sensibility and an unwillingness to be pinned down to an exciting and vibrant plot. We've never covered a book like this before - it promises to be a great discussion!
This edition of the book club will be a hybrid in-store and online session! Email us at [email protected] for the online login information if you're joining us that way, or come to the store and enjoy some company and Japanese snacks. You can read the book in any language, but the discussion is primarily in English. You're also welcome to come if you haven't read the book, but there will be spoilers.
