We become privy to the small moments between (and sometimes amid) the chaos of the period: market conversations between women, digging frozen potatoes from a cellar, poetry readings among the Soviet bohemians. Tsvetaeva is ruthless, compassionate, keen, and altogether brilliant in this precious collection.
