Info: This Jane’s Walk will be taking you around a familiar location in Markham— First Markham Place, but with a different story to tell. Migration, ethnic economies, third places and spaces, and urbanization, what does this strip mall plaza, a relic of 1980s architectural design, have to do with the future of Markham, and Canada in general? On this walk, we will dive into the complicated social, economic, and international relations shaping our local community through this plaza that brings life and culture to the city, simultaneously tackling the difficult question if these places should be preserved or, if there’s another life for them. The tour will go around the plaza and end up in the iconic food court. Meeting location: First Markham Place (FreshWay Foodmart, 3275 Highway 7, Markham ON).
