Are you a well-traveled and wizened denizen of Internetland, or did you grow up immersed in digital culture? Then this Crash Course, co-hosted by Alex Falk & Kendal Beynon, is for you!In this sixth season of the crash course, we’ll turn our focus to the Internet and the impact digital culture and online phenomena have on us as individuals and as a society.
The internet and its culture have undeniably reshaped our lives and society in multifaceted ways. It has for example enabled global connectivity and brought instant access to a wealth of knowledge. However, this connectivity and access also led to challenges such as misinformation, privacy concerns, and digital divides.
Internet culture, with its memes, trends, and online communities, has influenced how people communicate, express themselves, and form identities. It has blurred geographical boundaries, fostered new forms of creativity and collaboration, and amplified diverse voices. Yet, also raises concerns about mental health, who gets to govern and moderate these digital spaces, and that it seems increasingly more difficult to distinguish between the online and offline reality.
As the internet’s impact on society continues to grow in complexity, artists continue to critique, question, and reveal how internet technology and its culture intertwine.
Throughout four interconnected evenings, we will look at how internet culture has influenced our sense of identity, how we communicate, the way we build communities, and how information flows. Invited artists, other researchers, and experts working in the field of digital culture will help us break down each subject and look at it from different perspectives, both critical and laudatory.
