About this Event

Walking in the footsteps of exiles we will explore Bloomsbury as a place of refuge, with many important aid agencies for refugees located here, as well as plenty of cheap boarding houses and hotels offering affordable and central accommodation. Bloomsbury is also a place of learning, and we will talk about the context of the University of London and other archives and educational institutions and their connection with refugees as academics and students.

We will be stopping at locations relevant to refugees from the Nazis and also touch upon Basque child refugees from the Spanish civil war and Hungarian students fleeing after the uprising in 1956.

Developed by Senate House Library, the Institute of Languages, Cultures and Societies and the Research Centre for German & Austrian Exile Studies, with the kind assistance of the Wiener Holocaust Library and Quakers in Britain.

This walk will take place outside, in the streets around Bloomsbury. We will meet at the reception of Senate House (South Block) on the ground floor for a punctual start at 11 am.
