The Show Format
This will be a 45–50-minute narrative improv show following the basic structure of an episode of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. All storylines follow the Power Rangers as they interact with their mentor Zordon & bumbling robot assistance Alpha Five, the local high school bullies Bulk & Skull, and having to deal with evil Rita Repulsa and her army of fearsome monsters– all while keeping their secret identities a secret!
Available Roles
We are looking for a cast of around 10-13 people. Five will play the main characters: those teenagers with attitude, the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. These roles are; Jason, Zack, Billy, Trini, and Kimberly! We’re also looking to cast the roles of Bulk, Skull, Zordon, Rita Repulsa, and as well as 3-4 additional roles as secondary characters to play various Angel Grove townsfolk as well as the voices of monsters. No professional voice acting experience is needed to perform any role. Only the role of Alpha Five has been pre-cast.
Roles are open to all who are interested and are not being cast strictly based on the genders or identities of the cast from the original show. (The characters will retain their gender and identities from the original show) We will also be considered members of the secondary cast as understudies for the main five Power Rangers if the performers cast cannot attend a specific performance date.
MAIN
Jason: The leader of the Power Rangers. A meat-head jock and obsessed with karate but he’s pure-hearted, ultimately good natured and heroic minded.
Zack: The cool, hip, and laid-back member of the team. He’s always quick with a joke and uses creative ways to deal with the villains.
Billy: The geeky member of the team with a large vocabulary that often confuses the other members of the team. He’s also an inventor who is always making wacky gadgets that they use in life and to fight the monsters.
Trini: She’s even balanced and the secret glue that holds the team together. She’s just as smart as Billy, but can also be as much of a jock as Jason and girly-girly with Kimberley.
Kimberly: Appears to be typical Valley Girl prioritized with shopping, clothing, and boys. However, she’s a lot smarter than she looks and is a brave warrior in battle.
DOUBLE-CAST/SUPPORTING/Voiceover Roles
Bulk: One half of the local bullies in Angel Grove as well as being the leader of the duo and the “brains” of the operations but that’s not saying much. He and Skull are always giving the main teens trouble while also trying to figure out the secret identities of the Rangers.
Skull: The sidekick to Bulk and his best friend. Not the brightest bulb in the box and is always down and ready to do whatever scheme Bulk has come up with. Has a crush on Kimberly.
Zordon: The wise and sage mentor of the Power Rangers and the one who granted them their powers. He always dispenses wisdom and he has the uncanny ability to always seem to know what Rita’s plans are, somehow.
Rita Repulsa: The evil Space Sorceress and arch enemy of the Power Rangers who is seeking to destroy humanity and take over the earth. Has anger issues and is always screaming about her headaches.
Goldar, Finster, and Monsters of the Day: Rita’s evil henchmen always ready to carry out their mistress’s plans for world domination.
Various Townsfolk of Angel Grove: The various citizens that inhabit the Ranger’s hometown of Angel Grove. None of them ever seem to realize who the Rangers really are, even when they always wear the same colors of their hero counterparts.
The Audition
A successful auditioner will keep in mind the show’s format and its character tropes as well as having a strong grasp of narrative improv. Preference will be shown for performers who have the ability to do strong character work and are able to take preexisting character trait(s) and honor them while being able to find new, fun, and entertaining ways that make the characters their “own.” We’re also looking for performers who can move with a high level of energy and physical expression in pantomime.
Please arrive ready to share a few characters you would be comfortable playing, as well as any characters you definitely do NOT wish to be considered for.
For the audition, you will be asked to:
- Improvise short scenes NOT in character
- Read sides from the show for characters you are interested in (there is no need at all to have a character impression, but if you want to show us one you may!)
- We may ask you to do some movement and show off high energy performance, with no martial arts or stage combat experience required. (Though you should let us know if you do have these experiences!)
