About this Event
The Dead Man
Directed and Translated by Szilvi Naray, Written by János Háy
The Dead Man is a powerful, topical play about identity, power, and the cost of autonomy. At its heart is a woman who refuses to be defined by the expectations placed upon her, challenging what it means to belong, to remember, and to move on.
"It is a metaphor for what happens when a relationship dies and one person from the couple wants to resurrect the relationship without any consideration or understanding that time has passed and they are pretending they can just step back in to the relationship" (Dir. Szilvi Naray)
Set against the backdrop of war, the play explores how conflict reshapes lives far beyond the battlefield, especially for women.
It asks difficult, uncomfortable questions: Who gets to decide when the past is over? What do we owe to those we once were? And what happens when someone refuses to return to who they used to be?
Raw, thought-provoking, and strikingly relevant, The Dead Man speaks directly to a world still shaped by war, displacement, and shifting power.
This is not comfortable theatre. It’s necessary theatre.
Content note: Themes of war, grief, and domestic conflict.
