Go beyond vivid natural imagery and simple recordings of everyday behavior to discover the deeper, underlying tensions between people and the landscapes they inhabit. In this supportive, interactive workshop, participants of all skill levels will explore selected works from instructor Steve Brown’s three poetry collections (Trample & Sew, News of Need, and Fellowship) to see how human experience and the environment interact on the page. Through guided prompts drawing on family histories, personal memories, and imagination, you will learn to observe the world around you with fresh eyes. The session offers ample time to share your new writing, receive constructive feedback, and gain practical coaching on performance and reading techniques. You will leave the workshop with at least the kernels of two new original poems.
About the Instructor: Born in Flint, Michigan, Steve Brown studied art in Detroit and Germany, where his essay collection Glänze, Gespenst! was published. He is the author of three poetry collections—Trample & Sew, News of Need, and Fellowship—and his essays and short stories have earned two Pushcart Prize nominations, appearing in Witness, Black Warrior Review, Tusculum Review, DIAGRAM, Dunes Review, and elsewhere. An award-winning visual artist and accomplished performer, Steve has also led a Kalamazoo-based charitable foundation dedicated to reducing poverty since 2017.
Schedule & Registration: The workshop takes place on Saturday, September 12, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Ludington Area Center for the Arts. Tuition is $25.00 for LACA members and $35.00 for non-members. You can register online at ludingtonartscenter.org or by calling 231-845-2787. In addition to the workshop, you are invited to join Steve for a live poetry reading on Tuesday, September 8, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with a $5.00 suggested donation at the door to support LACA.
