Rover, Dead Rover Rule – If the family pet is found dead, everyone knows something supernatural or monstrous has arrived.
Talking Killer – Instead of immediately killing the hero, the villain explains the plan or taunts the victim, giving them time to escape.
Short Life Syndrome – Night watchmen, security guards, janitors, and lone police officers almost never survive.
The Basement Rule – Never investigate the strange noise in the basement... yet someone always does.
The Flashlight Rule – Batteries always die at exactly the worst possible moment.
The Car Won't Start – The vehicle has worked perfectly until the killer appears.
The Split-Up Rule – "We'll cover more ground if we split up." They won't.
The Investigate the Noise Rule – Instead of leaving, the protagonist walks toward the terrifying sound.
The Mirror Scare – A medicine cabinet closes, revealing something standing behind the character in the mirror.
The Final Girl – One survivor—usually the most observant, resourceful, or cautious—faces the killer in the climax.
The False Death – The monster or killer appears dead until someone gets too close.
The Last Jump Scare – After everything seems over, one final scare arrives just before the credits.
The Isolated House – A cabin, farmhouse, lighthouse, or abandoned asylum where help is impossibly far away.
No Signal – Phone lines are cut, the cell phone has no reception, or every form of communication suddenly fails.
The Local Crazy Person – A seemingly unstable local warns everyone not to go there—and turns out to be right.
Forbidden Book/Tape/Object – Someone reads the Latin, plays the mysterious tape, opens the ancient box, or watches the cursed video despite obvious warnings.
The Skeptic – A character refuses to believe anything supernatural is happening until becoming the next victim.
The Expert Arrives Late – A priest, occult scholar, historian, or lone survivor finally explains the evil halfway through the movie.
Never Turn On the Lights – Characters wander through dark buildings with tiny flashlights instead of turning on every light they can find.
The Creepy Child – A child knows exactly what's happening but adults dismiss their warnings.
The Haunted Doll – An innocent-looking doll or toy becomes terrifying once everyone is asleep.
The Locked Door – Every exit suddenly sticks, jams, or locks when escape becomes necessary.
The Shower Surprise – A vulnerable moment in the shower is interrupted by a killer or a fake-out scare.
The Fake Relief – The music stops, everyone relaxes, and then the real attack begins.
