Join us to hear the story of three young orphaned brothers from New York who followed their older sister to Adrian, Michigan in 1867. With no plans for the future, they sold sewing machines and other household items to earn money. In 1879 they changed their focus and founded the music house, moved to Detroit, and eventually opened 43 branch stores in Michigan, Ohio, and Windsor, Ontario. By the 1950s, the Grinnell Brothers Music House was the largest music company in the world!
This program will also detail the evolution of musical instruments, gramophone-to-record players, guitars and mandolins, as well as popular music. “Everything in the Realm of Music” was the Grinnell Brothers mantra. A few music selections will be played.
The presenter's book, Grinnell Brothers Music House: 1879-1981 is available to check out from the library.
