About this Event
This exclusive guided walking tour takes you through the origins, turning points, and defining moments of the city. From medieval beginnings to the Golden Age, from religious upheaval to global trade power, you’ll gain a clear understanding of how Amsterdam developed into the city it is today.
We start at Amsterdam Central Station and walk through the historic heart of the city, crossing both the Oude Zijde and Nieuwe Zijde, including the iconic canal belt.
What You’ll Discover
- The origins of Amsterdam and the role of the Schreierstoren
- The 15th-century city wall that was already outdated upon completion
- The Nieuwmarkt and the Waag (Sint Anthonispoort) — and the story behind Rembrandt’s Anatomy Lesson
- The transformation of the Zeedijk from a rough 1980s “no-go area” to what it is today
- The Alteration of 1578 and why Amsterdam has three St. Nicholas churches visible from one point: Oude Kerk, Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder, Basilica of St. Nicholas
