About this Event

27/6: Between Pages – Necessary Fiction, Eloghosa Osunde

What does it mean to be queer in Lagos? What makes you proud of who you are, and who or what brought healing into your life? In Necessary Fiction, Eloghosa Osunde (they/them) asks exactly those questions. Against the backdrop of Nigeria's Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act of 2013, their novel centres something else entirely: love, community and healing, in all the forms they can take.

Osunde is a writer and multidisciplinary artist, known for their debut novel Vagabonds!. Their work moves between the everyday and the spiritual through a magical realist lens. Necessary Fiction is made up of short stories following characters across all layers of society.

CommUnity

This session is part of our CommUnity programme and is exclusively open to FLINTAQ* people. We want to create a space where joy, healing and community come first.

Moderator Amber Netten leads the conversation about the themes in the book: queer identities, community, healing and love. Not as abstract concepts, but as something you know, recognise, or are still figuring out. There's room to explore how you relate to these themes. Haven't finished the book or never opened it? Come anyway. Necessary Fiction is made up of short stories following characters across all layers of society. Pick the stories that speak to you and come along.

The programme also includes a poetry workshop as a guided way to engage with the book's themes and your own stories.
