About this Event

28/3: Between Pages - Our Sister Killjoy, Ama Ata Aidoo

What does it mean to navigate Europe as a woman, as a migrant, as an African, through a continent that sees itself as the center of the world? Ama Ata Aidoo asked that question in 1977 and the answer hasn't become any less urgent since.

Our Sister Killjoy follows Sissie, a young Ghanaian woman travelling through Europe with a sharp, unfiltered gaze. It is her debut novel and immediately one of the most powerful voices in modern West African literature. Aidoo, writer, politician and academic, weaves prose and poetry together into something that reads like a letter, an indictment and a love declaration all at once. Diaspora, identity, language and the legacy of colonialism are explored, not as abstract themes but as something you feel through the skin of the character.

Between Pages is our new reading series led by Amber Netten: four books, four sessions, one ongoing conversation about literature, diaspora and postcolonial history.

Haven't finished the book or never opened it? Come anyway. During the discussion the book is explored in depth and a community member reads passages aloud. The conversation that follows is what it's all about. Together we examine the history and legacy of a postcolonial world. This is also the last time we open our doors to the public in Bijlmer. A beautiful moment to close that chapter together.

Good to know: The book is available in our webshop (while stocks last). If not, support your local bookstore!
