Kamweti route is one of the least used route up Mt. Kenya retaining the mountain beauty and splendor, the less travelled path.. come with us and create your memories..
Below is a description of the route.
Day 1: Castle Lodge - Kamweti (2,084m – 2,650m)
We leave Nairobi for Castle Forest Lodge (2,084m) on the northern slopes of Mt Kenya. We meet with our crew of porters and guides and get our mountain gears and in place and enjoy lunch at Castle Lodge, we then commence a 3 hours hike through the natural forest to the Kamweti's old forest station (2,650m), small detour to the waterfall and the back on the path to Kamweti campsite where we spend the night in pitched tents.
Day 2: Kamweti - Sagana Campsite (2,650m – 3,150m)
We have an early breakfast at camp and start the trek which is approx. 15kms. Into the dense virgin bamboo forest which is the most striking feature of this route mark the beginning of the actual mountain trek. This will take about 6hrs through dense stands of towering bamboo to Sagana River camp at an altitude of 3,154m. Picnic lunch will be served en-route and dinner at overnight camp at Sagana campsite.
Day 3: Sagana Campsite - Thegu Camp (3,150m - 3,750m)
This is also an early start day as we exit the bamboo zone into the Hagenia rosewood zone which, in turn, yields to heather zone. This take meter by meter as its gets steeper approaching the moorland zoe. The edge of the moorlands marks our lunch spot before heading up through unique endemic mountain vegetation of giant lobelia and groundsels. This trek takes about 7.5kms to arrive at Thegu River camp (3,750m). Our overnight spot offers exhilarating peak views. Dinner is served in our overnight camp in tents at Thegu River camp.
Days 4: Thegu Camp - Mackinders Camp (3,750m - 4300m)
In the giant lobelia zone proper the trek continues in a steady incline up for about 3.5 hours to lake Hornell, trekking through beautiful tropical alpine vegetation dotted with Senecio and Lobelia plants. By the shores of this scenic lake we stop for lunch before a proceeding for another two hours trail through enchanting terrain to reach Mackinder's Camp (4,300m) within the Teleki Valley. Overnight will be at the campsite in close proximity to the mountain hut. Dinner is served early tonight to allow time to get good rest in readiness for an early start the next day aiming for the summit.
Day 5: Mackinders Camp - Point Lenana – Lake Ellis camp (4,300m – 4,985M - 3450m)
As indicated we start very early at 2.30am aiming for the 3rd highest point in Kenya, it is the reason we are here. After an early light breakfast, we begin on a quite steep incline on a bare rocky trail for about 3 hours to reach Austrian Hut. From here on clear day you should be able to site the summit peak board and the Via Ferrata, on your left the only remaining glacier in the Mt. Kenya Region with Point Nelion on the background. Then, a pushy I hour our efforts are rewarded to reach the summit, Lenana peak at 4,985m in time for sunrise - Kilimanjaro is usually visible to the south and the Aberdares to the North. Though tired after this demanding conquest we'll be absolutely ecstatic that we've made it to the top. After celebrations at the top, we start down to Shipton Camp (4200m) in 1.5hrs hours for our second breakfast then precede further down to Lake Ellis Camp (3450m). We spend the evening enjoying the beauty of this excellent spot.
Day 6:Lake Ellis Camp (3450m) - Chogoria Gate (2950m)
After breakfast, we start our way down to finish the hike via Nithi Falls and the caves as we exit to join the classic Chogoria trail. Along the trail, just turn and look back to where you came from.
