Here’s a detailed 4-day itinerary for a safari trip through Amboseli Tsavo West and Tsavo East:
Day 1: Nairobi to Amboseli National Park
Your adventure begins with an early morning departure from Nairobi at around 7:00 AM. You’ll head towards Amboseli National Park a roughly 4-hour drive through scenic landscapes dotted with small towns and Maasai villages. The road to Amboseli offers a great introduction to Kenya’s vast and diverse terrain. You’ll arrive at Amboseli around mid-morning and check into your lodge or camp such as Ol Tukai Lodge Amboseli Serena Lodge or Kibo Safari Camp.
After check-in and a relaxing lunch you’ll embark on your first afternoon game drive at around 3:00 PM. Amboseli is famous for its large elephant herds and stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro making for excellent wildlife photography. In addition to elephants you may also spot lions cheetahs giraffes zebras buffaloes and a variety of bird species. As the sun begins to set you’ll return to your lodge for dinner enjoying the serene evening and the magical backdrop of Kilimanjaro.
Day 2: Amboseli to Tsavo West National Park
After an early morning game drive at 6:30 AM to catch the park’s wildlife at its most active you’ll return for breakfast at the lodge. Once you’ve refueled you’ll check out and begin your journey to Tsavo West National Park which is about a 3-hour drive from Amboseli. Along the way you’ll pass through the Shetani Lava Flow a striking black lava field formed by volcanic activity.
Arriving at Tsavo West you’ll check in to your lodge or camp such as Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge or Finch Hattons Camp. After lunch and some rest you’ll set out for an afternoon game drive. Tsavo West is known for its dramatic landscapes including rolling hills rocky outcrops and dense vegetation. You’ll visit Mzima Springs where crystal-clear waters attract hippos crocodiles and numerous bird species. You may also spot leopards rhinos and large herds of elephants. As the day winds down you’ll return to your lodge for dinner and relaxation.
Day 3: Tsavo West to Tsavo East National Park
Start the day with a pre-breakfast game drive at 6:30 AM exploring more of Tsavo West’s wildlife-rich areas. After breakfast back at the lodge you’ll check out and begin your journey to Tsavo East National Park. The parks are adjacent so it’s a shorter drive about 1-2 hours depending on your route and stops along the way.
Arriving at Tsavo East known for its vast open plains and red-earth terrain you’ll check into your accommodation such as Ashnil Aruba Lodge or Voi Safari Lodge. After settling in and enjoying lunch you’ll head out for an afternoon game drive. Tsavo East is famous for its red-dusted elephants and the Mudanda Rock a massive outcrop that attracts animals to its waterholes. The Galana River cuts through the park attracting wildlife such as buffaloes giraffes zebras and lions. Return to your lodge at sunset for dinner and an evening of relaxation under the stars.
Day 4: Tsavo East to Nairobi
On your final day begin with a morning game drive at 6:30 AM capturing the beauty of the park in the soft morning light. Tsavo East’s vastness provides great opportunities to spot lions cheetahs elephants and even the rare hirola antelope. After the game drive you’ll return to the lodge for breakfast pack your bags and check out.
Depart from Tsavo East by mid-morning for the drive back to Nairobi which takes about 5-6 hours. Enjoy the scenic ride and keep an eye out for wildlife along the way. You’ll stop for lunch en route arriving in Nairobi by late afternoon. You’ll be dropped off at your hotel or residence marking the end of your unforgettable 4-day safari through some of Kenya’s most iconic parks.
