About this Event

The National Hedgehog Monitoring Project is in it's THIRD year of monitoring in Cardiff and we’re looking for volunteers to help put out cameras on Thursday 2nd July in Heath Park.

  • We will introduce the survey and show you how to set up the cameras, before we split into teams to put them out across the site.
  • The cameras are collected 30 days later, and images are uploaded to our hub on MammalWeb.
  • You can already view and identify what’s been spotted by the cameras so far on MammalWeb, to help the team identify which images contain hedgehogs and other wildlife.

The National Hedgehog Monitoring Project is in it's second year of monitoring in Cardiff and we’re looking for volunteers to help put out cameras in Heath Park. We will introduce the survey and show you how to set up the cameras, before we split into teams to put them out across the site.

This event includes outdoor activity so please wear suitable shoes and clothing, and bring snacks and water for the day. The end time is listed as an estimate the event may be finished earlier.

Sadly, our much-loved hedgehogs are under threat, having undergone considerable declines in recent years. To reverse this trend, we need to understand it better, to identify where and why hedgehogs are struggling and implement appropriate conservation measures. People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) and BHPS, in partnership with Cardiff Local Nature Partnership, Cardiff University, Cardiff Council, Nottingham Trent University, Zoological Society of London, Durham University and MammalWeb, are launching a new National Hedgehog Monitoring site. The NHMP will, for the first time, produce reliable estimates of hedgehog numbers that will allow us to look at regional and habitat differences, and detect changes over time. Using a network of cameras deployed at survey sites to capture images of hedgehogs and other animals, the team will apply innovative methods to analyse the images and calculate population densities.

If you are no longer able to make the event, please remember to cancel your ticket to enable others to attend.

All ages and abilities are welcome but please let us know if you need any specific assistance.

Mae'r Prosiect Monitro Draenogod Cenedlaethol yn ei ail flwyddyn o fonitro yng Nghaerdydd a gallwch chi gymryd rhan! Rydym yn chwilio am wirfoddolwyr i helpu i roi camerâu allan ar ddydd Iau 2 July ym Parc Mynydd Bychan a'u casglu 30 diwrnod yn ddiweddarach. Byddwn yn cyflwyno'r arolwg ac yn dangos i chi sut i sefydlu'r camerâu, cyn i ni rannu'n dimau i'w rhoi allan ar draws y safle. Ar ôl i'r camerâu gael eu casglu, mae delweddau'n cael eu llwytho i fyny i'n hwb ar MammalWeb. Gallwch eisoes weld a nodi'r hyn sydd wedi'i weld gan y camerâu hyd yn hyn y llynedd, i helpu'r tîm i nodi pa ddelweddau sy'n cynnwys draenogod a bywyd gwyllt arall.

Yn anffodus, mae ein draenogod annwyl dan fygythiad, ar ôl i’w niferoedd ddirywio'n sylweddol dros y blynyddoedd diwethaf. I wrthdroi'r duedd hon, mae angen i ni ei deall yn well, gwybod ble a pham mae draenogod yn ei chael hi'n anodd a gweithredu mesurau cadwraeth priodol. Mae Ymddiriedolaeth y Bobl ar gyfer Rhywogaethau Mewn Perygl (PTES) a BHPS, mewn partneriaeth â Phartneriaeth Natur Leol Caerdydd, Prifysgol Caerdydd, Cyngor Caerdydd, Prifysgol Nottingham Trent, Cymdeithas Sŵolegol Llundain, Prifysgol Durham a MammalWeb, yn lansio safle cenedlaethol newydd i Fonitro Draenogod. Bydd y NHMP, am y tro cyntaf, yn cynhyrchu amcangyfrifon dibynadwy o niferoedd draenog a fydd yn caniatáu i ni edrych ar wahaniaethau rhanbarthol a chynefinoedd, a chanfod newidiadau dros amser. Gan ddefnyddio rhwydwaith o gamerâu mewn safleoedd arolygu i ddal delweddau o ddraenogod ac anifeiliaid eraill, bydd y tîm yn defnyddio dulliau arloesol i ddadansoddi'r delweddau a chyfrifo dwysedd poblogaeth.

Mae croeso i bob oedran a gallu ond rhowch wybod i ni os oes angen unrhyw gymorth penodol arnoch.

Os nad ydych chi'n gallu dod i’r digwyddiad mwyach, cofiwch ganslo'ch tocyn i alluogi eraill i fynychu.
