About SambaGanza:
SambaGanza is the official Samba ensemble of the Vermont Jazz Center in Brattleboro VT. SambaGanza is run as part of the Vermont Jazz Center's teaching mission, under the dual direction of composer/ethno-musicologist/bandleader Julian Gerstin, and musician/educator and Bread and Puppet music director emeritus, Ronald Kelley.
The word Ganza is one of several names for the shaker that's one of the signature instruments of Samba in Brazil. The word Samba refers to a large range of geographical musical traditions in Brazil, inextricably linked to Carnival, from Rio De Janeiro, to Salvador, Bahia, Pernambuco, Sao Paolo, and virtually every region of Brazil. We have synthesized the name SambaGanza to represent the extravaganza that is Carnival in Brazil, the United States, or anywhere people choose to honor the creativity of the people of the great nation of Brazil.
