Our September talk will give a history of the Hawthorn Ridge area from its early occupation, the plan and execution of the blowing of the mine on 1st July 1916 and its filming by Geoffrey Malins. We look at some of the participants involved on that famous (and infamous) day. The subsequent second blow in November and the successful capture of Beaumont Hamel.
Rick Smith is a founder member of the Hawthorn Ridge Crater Association, and an MA graduate in Great War Studies from Wolverhampton University. Rick brings over 45 years of Great War research to his talk.
Why not come along and find out more? Members and non-members of The Western Front Association are equally welcome. Anyone new to our group is guaranteed a friendly atmosphere, and a warm welcome over a cuppa. Parking is free, but we ask visitors for a small donation of £4 to cover room hire and speakers’ expenses.
