Join James Freeman—lifelong bus enthusiast and former CEO of Reading Buses—for a fascinating journey through the history of Winchester’s iconic King Alfred buses.
In this richly illustrated talk, James shares the story of King Alfred Motor Services, a family-run company that shaped local transport for over fifty years. From its origins in World War One to its heyday in the mid-20th century, and eventual takeover in 1973, the company’s legacy lives on through the lovingly restored fleet of the Friends of King Alfred Buses (FoKAB).
Discover how these vintage green buses, now a familiar sight during Running Days and Heritage Open Days, were rescued from across the world and brought home to Winchester. With personal anecdotes, historical insight, and a deep affection for the vehicles and their crews, James brings the past to life—and celebrates the community keeping it alive today.
Ticket price includes a complimentary soft drink on arrival.
