Welcome to our one-day seasonal hat tournament on Sunday, November 3rd to give folks a taste of competition and encourage learning about the rules and spirit of the game. We play across the street from the African-American Museum on the Northeast Quadrant of the Monument (intersection of 15th and Constitution). To join, RSVP GOING by October 31st (Halloween!) at 3pm by responding to this Facebook event. Please do not mark 'interested' because that makes planning highly difficult and you will not be placed on a team. Keep your RSVP updated for planning and team purposes. Please only attend the hat tournament if you've come to a regular pickup game at least once - this group adheres to protocols that you need to be familiar with. Cap is at 48. We will have a waitlist for those past 48, so please respect the waitlist and shoot Gibson, Nate, Eugene, or Andrew a message prior to RSVPing after the cap is reached. If you show up without signing up or being on the waitlist, you can come, yet will not be placed on a team, given that others who have followed protocol do not show up until they are off the waitlist. Reason being is so those who have been waiting have a fair opportunity.
You must have full vaccination to include the booster; please stay home if you feel sick and we will be happy to take care of replacements. Please update your RSVP and message Nate, Andrew, or Eugene if you can no longer attend.
Everyone (watching or participating) will either donate canned food or pitch in $5 cash or venmo.... (feel free to come up with something for Halloween
The tentative schedule is from 9.30 am - 2.00pm on November 3rd . Captains will come a little before to hammer out some details. Details and teams will be published closer to the tournament date. Expect 3 games with short breaks between and a few fun spirit events sprinkled in.
If you want to be a team captain, send me a message. Captains should be willing to teach the basics of force, handlers/cutters, and spirit of the game, and serve as mediators for any in-game conflicts or questions about rules.
FAQ:
What is a hat tournament?
We pull names out of a hat to determine who plays on each team. It might not be a literal hat, but we'll do our best.
What if I don't know the rules?
Come ready to learn! We're using this as an opportunity to teach people a bit more about the rules and basic strategy, but it will still be very relaxed. The highest amount of strategy allowed on offense is a vert stack, defense is a force. No zones or cups. That said, if you are a captain, please clear it with all participants as well as opposing captains if you want to try something new.
What if I am new to the game?
We welcome everyone from never played to club
What score do we play to?
We will play to 11, or until an hour passes. We also look into spirit scores, 1 being poorest spirit imaginable, 4 being the epitome of spirit. These are assignment at the end of the game by captains.
What is the gender ratio?
Depends on the final roster of teams, preferably 4-3 or as close as possible, captains/WM players can talk if something different is needed.
What should I bring?
Water, snacks, running shoes, winter costume, white/dark shirt, canned foods
What if I have other questions?
Send your hosts a message!
Is there a theme?
Halloween! Wear a costume!
