Bring an open mind to the first of two Philosophy Club meetings being held in June at Hagaman Memorial Library in honor of America250! Our first meeting will focus on "The Spirit of the Laws" by Montesquieu on Monday, June 1st from 3 - 4pm in the Community Room, with details soon to come pertaining to our special second meeting. No RSVP needed to join this meeting of the minds!
Montesquieu’s "The Spirit of the Laws" is a 1748 foundational political treatise advocating for the separation of powers, arguing that liberty is maintained only when legislative, executive, and judicial powers are distinct. His most famous quote is "power should be a check to power" to prevent tyranny. Montesquieu’s work significantly influenced the authors of the U.S. Constitution, particularly regarding the system of checks and balances.
