The Historic Bluffton Foundation is honored to present Dr. Emory Shaw Campbell for an hour-long lecture entitled “Gullah Cultural Legacies.”Born and raised on Hilton Head Island, Dr. Campbell has devoted his life to the preservation of the cultural and environmental heritage of the Sea Islands. A biologist and environmental engineer by training, he served nearly a decade as an Environmental Health Engineer with Beaufort–Jasper Health Services before leading Penn Center on St. Helena Island as Executive Director for twenty-two years. During his tenure, he revitalized the Center’s educational mission and founded the nationally recognized Penn Center Heritage Days Celebration.
Dr. Campbell later served as Chairman of the federally appointed Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission and continues his work as President of Gullah Heritage Consulting Service.
In “Gullah Cultural Legacies,” he will examine the historical foundations, environmental knowledge systems, language traditions, land stewardship, and community structures that define Gullah identity and continue to shape the Sea Islands today.
