Granular Synthesis and Creative Sample Playback in Max MSP
About this Event
Discover granular synthesis and learn how to transform any sound into a rich, textural sonic landscape using Max MSP.
In this workshop we will explore granular synthesis, a technique that works by breaking audio into tiny fragments called grains and reassembling them in creative ways. We will learn how to construct a grain from scratch, apply an envelope to shape its amplitude (controlling how the grain fades in and out to give it a smooth, musical character), and play it back at different frequencies. From there we will look at how to layer multiple grains simultaneously to build dense, evolving textures. Please bring a laptop to this session. There is no cost to attend this workshop. Some prior experience with Max MSP or some other audio processing environment is recommended.

This session is part of a 10 week summer workshop series led by Miles Scharff, Mark Santolucito, and David Kramer at the Computer Music Center at Columbia University. These workshops are free and open to the public.
