Grain Rain (谷雨) falls on April 20th this year — the last solar term of spring, and the most celebrated moment in the Chinese tea world.

The 24 Solar Terms are based on the solar calendar — they track the sun's position in the sky throughout the year, not the cycles of the moon. This ancient system, over 2,000 years old, was developed by Chinese farmers to understand nature's rhythms and live in step with them. Grain Rain marks the moment when spring rains begin to fall in earnest — nourishing the grains, deepening the green, and changing the tea forever.

The Tea · 龙井明前 Longjing Mingqian

Before the rains, the tea plant grows slowly through the cool early spring. With less water and more time, the leaves concentrate everything — their sweetness, their fragrance — into a smaller, more delicate bud. The moment heavy rain arrives, the plant accelerates. Leaves grow faster, larger, and dilute.

Mingqian tea is rarer. The harvest window is only a few weeks. Farmers hand-pick only the youngest buds — sometimes just one leaf and one bud — before the rains change everything.

Longjing (龙井 · Dragon Well) is the most celebrated of all Mingqian teas, grown in the hills of Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. For centuries it was reserved for emperors.

We sourced this year's harvest directly from China — picked before the rains, shipped fresh to Toronto.
