Join us for an evening of deep rest, reconnection, and renewal, held in the resonant warmth of artisan gongs.
There is something the gong can do that very little else can: played just right, it soothes the body and draws you inward, out of the noise of the everyday and into the centre of yourself. This is an evening designed for exactly that: to offer presence, stillness, and whatever else arises when you give yourself space to simply be.
Joe's deepest work is the use of gongs and induced altered states in individual therapy. These monthly evenings are a different offering: a chance to gather around the gongs in shared intention and community. For most people, the evening is simply and deeply relaxing — though where it goes depends on the person, and what they're carrying. The gong meets you where you are.

What the Evening Holds
The evening opens with a guided meditation, carefully crafted to settle the nervous system and prepare you for the sound journey. Then you journey with the gongs: a deep, immersive field of vibration played across instruments ranging from 22" to 42". You won't need to do anything but arrive, and receive.
We close with time for quiet reflection over organic herbal tea, and gentle sharing for those who wish.

Why This is Different
"Sound work" has grown popular, and what's offered in this field varies enormously. Just as you would choose a concert for the musician and not simply the instrument, it matters who is playing, and what they are doing. The gong is an instrument like any other.
Joe works only with gongs, and only with gongs he has chosen for their qualities. He plays them gently, with a sensitivity that comes from a previous career as a professional musician. This is not a performance of sound for its own sake, and it is not the bright, busy texture of varied instruments, where the ear is drawn to this note here or that tone there, listening out. It is the opposite. Joe works with deep sounds that roll and morph, swell and retreat... a single carrying field, without discernible rhythm or melody, that asks nothing of your attention and lets you fall inward.
The effect is close to psychedelic in the truest sense: a softening of the ordinary mind, a loosening of its grip, a movement into something wider and deeper. Joe brings to this his working life: extensive experience as a psychotherapist, and a deep understanding of how the nervous system and the psyche respond to altered states. The result is something as musically crafted as it is therapeutically held.

What People Experience
Played this way, deep gong sound is designed to guide attention gently downward. Away from the busy, waking state of ordinary mind, into slower, deeper territory. For most people this is deeply relaxing, and they describe reduced anxiety, calmer sleep, greater emotional balance, and a clearer, quieter mind.
The orientation Joe suggests is simply curiosity and surrender. The psyche has its own intelligence, and whatever arises tends to be what it needs. There is little formal research on sound work this specific, but the mechanism is coherent and the experience consistent: with nothing on the surface to hold you, your nervous system can down-regulate and your attention is free to sink.
The gong's low-frequency vibrations are felt through the whole body, not only the ears, which is part of why the experience reaches as deep as it does.
