Golden Jubilee of British Brass in Rockville

The Rockville Brass Band enters its Golden Jubilee season with a free concert of works created during our first 50 years. Join us April 19, 2pm, in downtown Rockville at Richard Montgomery High School.

The band will play pieces composed or arranged after 1976, when this ensemble was founded to bring the sound of British Brass to Rockville. The works on the program range widely in style. They include the bold, brisk Liberty Fanfare by John Williams (1986) arranged by Steve Sykes (1987); a brass rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody by Freddie Mercury (1975) subsequently arranged by Christopher Wormald; a take on the American folksong Shenandoah and Across the Wide Missouri: Mid All the Traffic by Leonard Ballantine (2004); and William Himes’ (1983) adaptation of Richard Wagner’s 1848 opera classic Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral, from Lohengrin; as well as other works.

The Rockville Brass Band is the oldest continually operating British-style brass band in Maryland, and one of the oldest in the United States. Its members are professional musicians – former and current members of military bands, and professionally trained music instructors – as well as dedicated amateurs. They perform for the public, participate in competitions, and hold a music clinic and concert with students and seniors each June.
