VERDANT DWELLING extends into 2026, an exhibition of Rachel Fallon’s ‘Blown In’, Eva Vēvere’s ‘Hedgerow Bodies’. Companion works by Conall Downs (‘Dawn Voyager’) and Jaana Laakkonen ('a coat, a basket, a shelter, a holder, inside, inside’) continue to exhibit at Glandwr alongside VERDANT DWELLING , creating an opportunity to connect with these works for a limited run in January.
This project draws on the less easily perceived, reliable constants such as a weekend lunch in a home/Glandwr that was always available to everyone and tangible, the house holds a history of support creating subtle but noticeable differences, vital to living. Rachel Fallon and Eva Vēvere find their own visual language that is communicative but not didactic.
Rachel Fallon teases out where the wider picture of land / housing rights, colonialism and ecology collides with neighbourliness, domestic gardens and local politics. For VERDANT DWELLING Rachel explores belonging and freedom of expression in a total un-‘natural’ characterful fabricated interior environment. This new work contains multiple narratives subversive perspectives and viewpoints afforded through visible inner, outer and folded sculptures.
Eva Vēvere’s practice is informed from her experience of living in a cross generational household, she is interested in ‘shared spaces’. Recent houseWORKhomeWORK residencies in Ireland, Latvia and Finland formed new ideas on how the environment and physical position of the body change experiences of connection. Nature within the domestic is part of the bigger conversation for Eva, it is about sharing space and time in the most subtle and intimate human experiences as well as in the larger social and political systems.
Companion artworks will also be on view at Glandwr;
Conall Downs works with ideas surrounding healing modes, animal ecology, and our distant connection to the natural world. Seeking to soften our understanding of the human experience, he aims to create his own folklore to translate subtle messages from transitory experiences - somewhere between fortune cookies and the natural realm. These ideas take shape in assembled and fabrictated installations, including sculpture, furniture, domestic displays, and drawings.
Jaana Laakkonen's artistic practice is a continuous experimental process of studio work and writing in which different materials, feminist-posthumanist critical thinking and feminist philosophy of science intertwine with everyday situations.Jaana’s outdoor installation – a companion to the Glandwr's houseWORKhomeWORK project – can be viewed both outside and inside at this event, and on later dates to be announced.
Debi Paul is a visual artist and curator; her practice is rooted in both performance and place, with a focus on the body. She often draws on / learns from site – specific communities of interest. Her work observes the connection between practice and philosophy and ideas that relate to the material world. Current practice research focuses on ‘the sensate’ ritual, and elements of magic realism.
