Gijs Van Vaerenbergh has been artists-in-residence at BAC ART LAB, KU Leuven's workspace for contemporary art, from the very start. In 𝙁𝙞𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙍𝙪𝙞𝙣𝙨 they present six projects from the past fifteen years.
Each project departs from a condition of absence: an architecture that is missing, incomplete, or exists only in memory.
𝙁𝙞𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙍𝙪𝙞𝙣𝙨 refers both to the works themselves and to their contexts. Ruins are never neutral; they are constantly rewritten and reinterpreted. From this perspective, the artists develop spatial interventions that balance between presence and absence, recognition and estrangement.
The projects are presented through scale models (1/50), complemented by video footage of the realized works.
