Imagine a time when everything you owned from undergarments to table linens had to be handmade, there were no shops to buy your clothes from. Animals and plants, flax and sheep wool specifically, were most commonly used during this time to make these items. This class is the first of our Sheepy Series where you will learn this age old process from start to finish. Learn how to clean fleece, prepare it for spinning, spin on a drop spindle first and then on a spinning wheel. Learn how to dye the this beautiful fiber using natural dyes over an open fire. With these dyed fibers you can learn to warp a loom and weave items.
Experience the sense of pride, accomplishment, and the tugging of the past by joining us in this endeavour.
In this class learn how freshly-shorn fleece is turned into yarn in this educational and interactive class.
Here's what you can expect: We will skirt two sheep fleeces, learning what is good for spinning and what to discard and why. We will learn how the fleece is cleaned and do some hands-on fleece washing. We will learn how to hand card or hand comb or flick the cleaned and dried fleece to prepare it for spinning. Finally, both drop spindle and spinning wheel spinning will be demonstrated.
