About this Event
The Georgia Adopt-A-Stream Macroinvertebrate Workshop is designed to teach volunteers how to monitor stream health by sampling the biological aspects of a stream. The macroinvertebrates (insects, mollusks, & crustaceans) found in a stream are excellent indicators of the condition of both water quality and habitat. This workshop will focus on collection techniques for either rocky or muddy bottom streams and macroinvertebrate identification. Volunteers who identify the macroinvertebrates with 90% accuracy and pass the written test with a score of 80% or better will be considered a QA/QC volunteer for one year.
Volunteers will learn how to use the Georgia Adopt-A-Stream database to create a group, pick a stream site and enter monitoring data. This program open to adults and teens that are accompanied by an adult and is great for volunteer work, community service and research projects.
We will start out inside the classroom in the morning and then go outside to learn sampling techniques and practice macroinvertebrate identification in a nearby stream. We will be walking a short distance so please bring comfortable walking shoes and water/rain boots if you have them. We may be outside for an extended period of time, please dress in layers in case of a change in weather. Bring your lunch and a drink. The Stormwater Department will be providing snacks and water.
The facility address is 865 South 9th Street, just south of the Hospital
