In 1826, Furman began as a small academy and seminary in Edgefield—far from the university campus north of Greenville today. Over the next two centuries, it moved, expanded, and evolved alongside South Carolina, shaping the state even as the forces beyond its gates reshaped Furman. Drawing from her richly illustrated new bicentennial history, Courtney Tollison Hartness asks: How did one institution survive 200 years of change while leaving such a lasting mark on Greenville and South Carolina?

About the speaker
Courtney Tollison Hartness is Distinguished University Public Historian and Scholar at Furman University. She is the author of Furman University: A Bicentennial History, 1826–2026, a comprehensive 350-page history featuring 1,180 historic and contemporary images.
