Music, Tragedy, and Healing: Conductor Jeffrey Rink on Mahler's "Resurrection" in Tokyo - Join us for a moving lecture with conductor Jeffrey Rink as he shares the extraordinary story of leading Mahler's Symphony No. 2 "Resurrection" in Tokyo in March 2011, a performance that coincided with the devastating Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. Despite unimaginable tragedy and immense structural, logistical, and cultural obstacles, the concert went on, becoming a powerful source of emotional release and healing for the community.

About Jeffrey Rink

An internationally acclaimed conductor, Jeffrey Rink has been praised by the Boston Globe as leading "a World-Class Concert Otello" and named "Boston's pre-eminent Verdi conductor" by the Boston Phoenix. A recipient of the Jacopo Peri Award for outstanding contributions to opera, his production of La Bohème with the Maryland Opera Theatre was hailed by the Washington Post as rivaling productions at the Metropolitan Opera or Covent Garden.

A regular presence on Japan's musical stage, Rink has led the New Japan Philharmonic, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo Philharmonic, and Tokyo Blumen Philharmonie, among others, including performances of Mahler's Symphonies No. 2, 5, and 8. He served as Music Director of the Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra from 2007 to 2018, and previously led Chorus pro Musica, the New England Philharmonic, and Concert Opera Boston, where he conducted numerous opera-in-concert performances and received national recognition for adventurous programming. He has also served as a cover conductor for the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Boston Pops.

Most recently, Rink was named Principal Guest Conductor and Artistic Advisor of the Brooklyn Orchestra (2024) and Conductor Laureate of the Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra (2025).
