About this Event

Stylish Notation: How 1400 Years of Writing It Down Has Evolved the Music. Since the earliest attempts in 9th Century Europe to capture musical sound on paper, music in the Western tradition has developed from the single, unadorned melodies of Gregorian Chant into the likes of Mozart, Stravinsky, and Duke Ellington. How did this happen? Why? What musical possibilities were opened by the ability to write it down? In this presentation peppered with numerous musical excerpts and visuals of manuscripts, Dr. Jon Grier will tell this story from the Medieval centuries to the Present.
