FUDOSHIN: Way of the Brush (不動心 — The Immovable Mind)
About this Event
Participants will be introduced to Shodo (Japanese calligraphy) not simply as an art form, but as a practice of awareness and connection. Through a guided breathing exercise and the movement of the brush, participants will explore the philosophy behind Japanese characters and discover how stillness can exist within movement.
Each participant will receive one of ten carefully selected kanji characters connected to Japanese philosophy and principles. The characters will be chosen through a unique experience — participants will not know which character they receive until the moment of discovery. Through learning the meaning behind their character, they will create their own personal expression through calligraphy.
Participants will also wear traditional Japanese-inspired clothing during the practice, allowing them to engage more deeply with the atmosphere, movement, and spirit of the experience. These clothes will be provided during the experience.
The focus is not on creating a perfect piece, but on experiencing the process — finding balance, intention, and connection through the relationship between the body, brush, and character.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Zane Johnson is a Japanese cultural practitioner, calligrapher, and founder of FUDOSHIN — a practice dedicated to sharing the Japanese Way as a path of presence, awareness, and personal growth.
Having spent over a decade studying and living in Japan, Zane’s work is deeply influenced by Japanese calligraphy (Shodo), martial arts philosophy, Japanese aesthetics, and traditional craftsmanship.
Through FUDOSHIN, he creates immersive experiences that connect people with the deeper meaning behind Japanese culture — moving beyond technique and into the experience of being fully present.
His approach combines calligraphy, breath, movement, and philosophy to create a practice where the brush becomes a tool for self-expression, awareness, and connection.
