FRONT TO BLACK: A Black Lit Club
About this Event
Jesymn Ward bring us the archetypal road novel into rural 21st century America.
Jojo and his toddler sister Kayla live with the grandparents Mam and pop, with the occasional appearance of their drug addicted mother Leonie on a farm in Mississipi. Leonie is haunted by visions of her dead brother, Mam is dying of cancer and Pop is working to run the household.
When the white father of Leonie’s children is released from Pr*son, she packs her kids and a friend into her car and sets out across the state for Parchman farm, the Mississippi State Penitentiary, on a journey rife with danger and promise.
Drawing on the likes of Morrison, Faulkner and Homer, Sing, Unburied, Sing , delivers an epochal story through past and present, grappling with the ugly truths at the heart of the American story and the power, and limitations, of the bonds of family.
