Book of the Month
About this Event
Get Involved with Our Book of the Month!
Each month, we’ll pick a novel we think you’ll love - something gripping, uplifting, thought-provoking, funny, or maybe even all of the above!
Whether you’re hooked from the first page or still making up your mind, you’ll have the chance to share your thoughts with other readers. Our Book of the Month group meets on the first Monday of every month in a friendly and welcoming library atmosphere.
It’s the perfect way to discover books you might not have chosen yourself and enjoy some lively, thoughtful conversations!
Our Book of the Month for August is Saraswati Park by Anjali Joseph.
We will discuss this book in our next meeting on Monday, 7 September at 4.30 pm.
Copies are available in the library.
About the Book
Set in a quiet corner of bustling Bombay, this thoughtful and warmly observed debut novel follows Mohan, a letter-writer who spends his days listening to other people's stories while avoiding his own. When his wife Lakshmi begins to question their life together and their nephew Ashish comes to stay, the fragile balance of their household starts to shift.
Through family tensions, unspoken desires and unexpected relationships, the novel explores love, loneliness, identity and belonging with humour and compassion. As Mohan watches those around him struggle and change, he is forced to confront his own fears, ambitions and the possibility of finding his voice at last.
Gentle, moving and beautifully written, this is a remarkable debut from one of Britain's most celebrated young writers.
