About this Event
Get Involved with Our Book of the Month!
Each month, we’ll pick a novel we think you’ll love - something gripping, uplifting, thought-provoking, funny, or maybe even all of the above!
Whether you’re hooked from the first page or still making up your mind, you’ll have the chance to share your thoughts with other readers. Our Book of the Month group meets on the first Monday of every month in a friendly and welcoming library atmosphere.
It’s the perfect way to discover books you might not have chosen yourself and enjoy some lively, thoughtful conversations!
Our Book of the Month for October is Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi.
We will discuss this book in our next meeting on Monday, 3 November at 4.30 pm.
Copies are available in the library.
About the book:
Transcendent Kingdom is a searing story of love, loss and redemption, and the myriad ways we try to rebuild our lives from the rubble of our collective pasts.
As a child Gifty would ask her parents to tell the story of their journey from Ghana to Alabama, seeking escape in myths of heroism and romance. When her father and brother succumb to the hard reality of immigrant life in the American South, their family of four becomes two - and the life Gifty dreamed of slips away.
Years later, desperate to understand the opioid addiction that destroyed her brother's life, she turns to science for answers. But when her mother comes to stay, Gifty soon learns that the roots of their tangled traumas reach farther than she ever thought. Tracing her family's story through continents and generations will take her deep into the dark heart of modern America.
About the author:
Yaa Gyasi is a Ghanaian-American novelist. Her work, most notably her 2016 debut novel Homegoing and her 2020 novel Transcendent Kingdom, features themes of lineage, generational trauma, and Black and African identities.
