Experience the forest after dark during an unforgettable overnight celebration of Louisiana's nocturnal wildlife! Join naturalists and insect experts at Fontainebleau State Park for a Moth Marathon, where illuminated moth sheets will be running continuously from sunset to sunrise, attracting an incredible variety of moths, robberflies, katydids, owlflies, and other fascinating nighttime insects.
Experts will be stationed at the moth sheets throughout the night to help identify species, answer questions, and share the remarkable stories behind these often-overlooked creatures. Whether you're a seasoned naturalist or simply curious, there's always something new to discover.
Want to contribute to science? Volunteers can sign up for a shift recording observations at the moth sheets—no experience is necessary, and experts will provide all the guidance you need.
The evening begins with a guided Dusk Hike (7:00–9:00 PM), offering a chance to watch the forest transform as daytime wildlife settles down and the nighttime world comes alive. Throughout the night, participants are welcome to relax around the campfire, visit the moth sheets at their leisure, or join our Solar Midnight Hike (1:00–3:00 AM) to experience nature at its quietest and darkest hour.
For those who want the full overnight experience, onsite camping at the primitive group camp site is available for just $10 per person. Come for an evening or stay all night! Camping is limited to ages 18+. Camping spots are limited and must be reserved on RecDesk ahead of time. Campers can set up camp starting at 5:00pm.
If you would like to only attend the Dusk Hike (7:00pm-9:00pm), meet us at Fontainebleau State Park’s Visitor’s Center at 6:45pm. Day Use participants are welcome to join us at the campsite for moth sheeting, but are required to leave the park by 10:00pm. The Day Use Fee ($3) must be paid by any participants who are not camping overnight; the Day Use Fee will be paid at Fontainebleau State Park’s front entrance station.
What is a moth sheet? A moth sheet is a simple setup used to observe moths and other nocturnal insects. It involves hanging a white sheet and shining a bright light or ultraviolet light on it, which attracts a diversity of insects, providing a surface for them to land on and be viewed. We will get an up close and personal view of some of Louisiana’s most magnificent insects!
