Invasive Species Removal Workday

Get outside, help the environment, and make friends!
While non-native plants can provide aesthetic benefits, they often make their way into natural areas and wreak havoc on the native ecosystem by out-competing native plants, decreasing soil and water quality, and reducing habitat and food sources for a variety of critters. When non-native plants establish themselves in the wild, there aren't any natural checks-and-balances to keep them under control, and become invasive.
Chinese Tallow, Chinese Privet, and Japanese Climbing Fern are three prolific invasive plant species that can be found at Northlake Nature Center, and we'd like to do something about it! Join Pelican Park Nature Programs and Landscape Architect on October 11th as we take on a large patch of Chinese Privet that borders the Beaver Pond. The work will involve hand-pulling, cutting, and digging.
Bring water, clothes you don't mind getting dirty, and close-toed shoes. We will have gloves and hand tools available; you can bring your own if you prefer. Long pants and sleeves and recommend to protect against hazards such as poison ivy and thorny plants.
Absolutely no experience necessary! The day will begin with a familiarization of invasive species, and how to mitigate them.
All participants will be required to fill out a safety waiver. You can fill out the waiver online by registering for this event (preferred) or we will have paper copies for your to sign at the event.
