Field to Classroom: A Louisiana Naturalist Workshop for Educators

Great science starts close to home. Spend the day discovering the remarkable ecosystems, plants, wildlife, and landscapes that make Southeast Louisiana one of the most biologically diverse regions in the country. Lunch provided!
Designed for teachers and informal educators, this free, one-day professional development workshop blends expert-led presentations with practical classroom connections covering regional geography, local ecology, native plants, birds, reptiles, conservation, and citizen science. Participants will explore ways to bring these topics into engaging, standards-aligned lessons while discovering free tools and community resources that allow students to contribute to real scientific research.
The day concludes with a guided nature hike, giving participants the opportunity to observe these concepts firsthand and experience the same sense of curiosity and discovery they can foster in their own students.
Whether you teach elementary science, biology, environmental education, or simply want to incorporate more outdoor learning into your curriculum, you'll leave with a deeper understanding of Louisiana's natural heritage, classroom-ready resources, and fresh inspiration to connect students with the natural world just beyond their classroom door.
Schedule:
8:30am: Check in, coffee, donuts.
8:45am: Introductions
9:00-9:45am: Geography of Louisiana: The "Why, the Ooo’s and the Ahh’s" Behind our Biodiversity.
10:00-10:45am: Local Ecology Crash Course: Plants, Birds, Reptiles, Insects, Mammals.
11:00-12:00pm: Lunch (provided), resources shared.
12:00-2:00pm: Northlake Nature Center Field Hike.

About the Program Coordinator:
Alex Landry is Pelican Park/Recreation District #1’s Naturalist and Environmental Education Programs Coordinator. He is a Certified Louisiana Master Naturalist, and sits on the Board of Directors for the Louisiana Master Naturalists of Greater New Orleans. He completed Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries’ Wetland Education Teacher Workshop (WETshop) in 2026, and is a Certified Venomous Snake Handler through the Rattlesnake Conservancy.
